1. What criteria should my primary name server meet?

  • Hostname: this must be a fully qualified domain name, e.g. server1.abc.com.my.
  • Netaddress: this must be the correct IP address, e.g. 1.2.3.4.
  • DO NOT list name servers without the explicit approval of their owners. The owners of the servers listed must configure their servers to make your domain name accessible.
  • In your Domain Name Registration Form, make sure your primary name server hostname and net address is different from your secondary name server(s) hostname(s) and net address(es).
  • Submit your application only AFTER your Internet connection is up and the primary name server has been configured for the domain name. Please ensure that your primary name server is accessible for DNS queries i.e. active and responsive to DNS queries BEFORE the Domain Name Registration Form is submitted.

2. Is a secondary name server necessary?

Yes, to act as the alternative server when the primary name server is down. This is to ensure that your name server is accessible 24 hours a day and to avoid unnecessary traffic on the Internet due to the failure to resolve network names on your server.

Make sure your secondary name server meets the following criteria:

  • Hostname: this must be a fully qualified domain name, e.g. server2.abc.com.my.
  • Netaddress: this must be the correct IP address, e.g. 5.6.7.8.
  • DO NOT list name servers without the explicit approval of their owners. The owners of the servers listed must configure their servers to make your domain name accessible.
  • In your Domain Name Registration Form, make sure your primary name server hostname and net address is different from your secondary name server(s) hostname(s) and net address(es).
  • Submit your application only AFTER your Internet connection is up and the secondary name server(s) has been configured for the domain name. Please ensure that your secondary name server is accessible for DNS queries i.e active and responsive to DNS queries BEFORE the application is submitted.

If you have more than one secondary name server, you can register it only AFTER your domain name has been successfully registered. To register, your Technical Contact must submit an application to add Secondary Name Server (under Modification of the domain name record).

If you do not have your own secondary server, most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) or domain name hosting providers can rent you one.

3. Is there any name server configuration guideline document which I can refer to?

Yes. Please refer to the Name Server Configuration Guidelines document.

4. Why can't I access my domain name, or other sub-domains within my domain name(e.g. can't access www.companyname.com.my within companyname.com.my)?

This is probably due to not having a DNS entry like ‘A’ record or ‘CNAME’ for that host in your zone file. If you have added a DNS entry, please make sure you have increased the ‘serial number’ of that zone file, then reload/restart the ‘named’ process for the changes to take effect.
